AWARENESS

There is a lot of ignorance regarding mental illness in the Indian society. Persons with mental disabilities and their families still experience stigma and discrimination on a daily basis. Many people have internalized the stigma, and are afraid to voice their concerns or seek support.

Creating awareness and dissemination of information on different aspects of mental health is one of our key areas of work. We have organised seminars, and webinars and ensured media coverage on mental health issues in the Chandigarh tricity region.

Walk for mental health @Sukhna Lake

October 10, 2024

October is observed as the World Mental Health Month every year. Citizens for Inclusive Living (CIL) Society, Chandigarh, organized a walk at the Sukhna Lake to raise awareness on mental health issues in Chandigarh. CIL comprises professionals, social workers, persons with disabilities and concerned citizens who aim to make Chandigarh more inclusive and caring for persons with mental and intellectual disabilities.

Speaking at the event Dr. B K (Simmi) Waraich said, 'Mental health is extremely important for each one of us. The National Mental Health Survey (2015-16) estimates that nearly 10 – 15 % of the adult Indian population faces some mental health challenge(s) during their lifetime. People keep suffering alone because of ignorance and widespread stigma. We must break barriers and create an enabling environment for people to seek help.'

Neelu Sarin, President of CIL, highlighted the fact that Chandigarh is a beacon of hope. 'While Chandigarh already has good mental health treatment facilities and professionals, the city will soon have north India's biggest government Group home for persons with mental and intellectual disabilities. The Group home is the culmination of the citizens' campaign over the last few years for community living of persons with mental disabilities', she said.

Dr Adarsh Kohli, retired Professor PGI, highlighted the challenges ahead for the management of the group home. 'We would offer all possible help to the UT Administration to make this a model group home', she said.
